How can I set up a program or application online to be used from a client computer?
Is there a way I can install a windows program to webspace and run it from a linux client computer? To specify, I'm a student at the University of Minnesota. I have access to linux machines running Ubuntu, however, the space allocated to us is too small for the program I would like to run on these computers. I do have webspace I can use though. The thing I'd like to be running on the linux computers is a windows application requiring installation. So is there a way to put/install/(whatever else it might be called) this program onto my webspace and be able to run it from the linux computers? I know it's probably unlikely, but maybe?
If you have a network filesystem on the server (like CIFS/SMB) then that could be mounted on the local Linux machine, and the program could be run out of it (though it would take a pretty serious performance hit over the Internet). But if the only thing you have is a bit of space for web pages, there is nothing you can do with that.
They don't let you plug in USB storage devices or anything like that?
An MS app is going to require an MS OS env, either in a VM on your system, or if you can get it to run, on the 'server'. Of course, if its just 'webspace' that's not going to work.
You can try to install the Windows app in Wine. Unfortunately you might run into some big problems to make things work.
If the application is installed on a MS server, then there is a tool that can be installed on IIS to be able to start Terminal Services from a weppage. It is been a long time ago that I have used it and I don't remember if it was possible to start a single application with it. Also I don't think that only having some webspace will be sufficient. The application needs to be installed on the server after all and IIS needs to be configured for it. One other problem is that you will need terminal service licenses from M$. That means if the administrative licenses aren't sufficient (you've got 2 admin licenses).
To be complete, there is also something like Citrix. But that's probably a bit too much...
Haha alright, thanks a bunch. I was actually hoping for doing it from webspace partially for the purpose of it being ridiculous. But yeah, I think I should be able to do it from USB memory. Thanks again.
