I am trying to install MediaWiki 1.18, and need to upgrade PHP.
I would be very appreciative if someone could provide or point me to specific instructions on upgrading PHP.
Here are the particulars.
Apache/2.2.3 (Red Hat) Server at localhost Port 80
PHP 5.1.6 (cli) (built: Nov 13 2010 16:08:24)
Copyright (c) 1997-2006 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v2.1.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2006 Zend Technologies
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.7 (Tikanga)
Assuming PHP installs into /usr/local/bin so as not to overwrite the installed PHP, how do I get APACHE's environment to see /usr/local/bin?
Many Thanks.

Reason: grammar
If the server is RedHat, then try asking RH for help, since you probably have a subscription to RH.
For RHEL 5 servers webtatic repo has a PHP version 5.2.17 or 5.3 if you want. It works great (as on my CentOS 5.x servers)
Anyway, the upgrade WILL replace installed version 5.1.6 with the one you will upgrade (post the server's details: "# uname -a" for easier resolving which distribution is using)
