HFS+, Netatalk, etc. Serving Macs.

I'm replacing an AppleTV that has a big HFS+ drive hanging off of it with a more powerful Linux machine (Zotac ION).

How well does HFS(+)(Journaled) work these days? If I leave this drive as HFS+, share it with Netatalk, will I still get ._ files on it when I access it with my Macs? I want to keep my iPhoto and iTunes libraries and some backups on this disk.
