Yep, that works. I think the best thing for me to do is remove all of the extra junk in the /var/named/chroot/var/named/ directory and then mimic what you provided for my real zone files.
I agree that it's better for you to write from scratch your zone files because of this mess. Just a couple of things to keep in mind:
Don't use absolute paths when you define the zone file inside a zone because it seems that your bind does not follow the chrooted path
You bind software is quite old (version 9.3.3rc2). If it's possible upgrade your bind to the latest version 9.5.1-P1 specially if you're going to use it to resolve requests from the internet, due to various security problems.
It's good practice to use a serial of the form: YYYYMMDDXX (YYYY: year, MM: month, DD: day, XX: revision no)

One question. Can you explain what field that dnsadmin.maiparts.com resides in is for? The examples I've found in different documentation doesn't have that.
This is the email of the person responsible for the domain. That is dnsadmin@maiparts.com in your case, but because the "@" is used by named to define the ORIGIN record, it's replaced by the dot "." in the SOA record.

Cheers

I figured out the source of confusion. This machine is also running pdns which is something I've never heard of until now. It seems it uses a mysql backend which explains some DNS information I was seeing in one of the DBs.

It isn't possible, that both named and powerdns running at the same time, since they both have to use port 53 tcp/udp. Unless each one is listening on a different interface. Since "ps -ef|grep named" showed named running, then I guess powerdns is not running.
BTW I've just came across this tutorial about powerdns, I you want to see how it works.

Regards

Both named and pdns were running, but on different interfaces. I did read a bit on pdns, but don't like it. I've disabled it and now have named configured and running correctly.
