There really isn't anything too it. Just setup an FTP server on your Linux machine (it is very likely one is already installed and running, depending on the distro) and connect to it via G4L.

You don't need any special setup on the server side to support it.

Smile Another user seeking help with G4L via FTP

*bump*

Hello all!

Here is my situation. We currently have imaging software in place that is actually a whole suite. However, since we only utilize a small fragment of it, we want to switch to a product that is low cost and works well. I was informed about G4L, and it would appear to be a great solution. Onward to the issue at hand.

I have an IBM laptop that currently has WinXP SP2 on it and this is the box that I would like to image (though I believe I only need the NTFS partition and so that is what I'm testing). The FTP Server (vsftp)is sitting on a box running CentOS 5.

When I boot G4L on the laptop with the CD, I select Raw Mode and fill in all the fields correctly. Regardless of what I name my file or what compression type I use, the file appears to successfully transfer to the FTP server as the G4L progress states so and in the directory on the CentOS box, the file (quite large) resides in the correct area. Additionally, the vsftp.log file says that the upload was successful and there are no errors.

However, the issue of transferring the imaged file back to the laptop from which it was taken creates issues. Again, I'm simply trying to test the software and to configure it to both upload and download. If I try to use BZIP (and yes I use the same compression uploading and downloading), I'm told that the file is corrupt and to run bzip2converter or bzcat -t imagefile to check. Neither of these returns any error messages. If I use LZOP compression and then try to retrieve the file from FTP, the G4L program produces a stdin error and states that the file is not an LZOP file. Finally, if I try to utilize GZip compression, the G4L program will return a message stating unexpected end of file.

Is the error occurring during the upload of the image? Is there a file size limit being set and where can I check? Any other suggestions would be most helpful and appreciated.

Thanks a bunch
SGlassman

Also, if I can provide any information I may have overlooked let me know.

I had the same error. The cause happened to be the file was encrypted by the filesystem, and not decrypted when FileZilla server accessed the file. I used FileZilla server on Windows 7.
