Smile [SOLVED]FTP problem: can create n move file n folders but can't copy...

Hey guys, I need help again this time FTP is acting weird in my workplace.
There is a centralized FTP server which are accessed by clients to develop some web development project and to achieve this the clients are using ftp service.
The problem is when they are trying to copy any files and directories they are getting the following error:
"Message reported from the file system: FTP copy not supported, use move instead"
I've checked all the permissions and they are all OK.
I don't know why this is happening... :| they can create and move files and folders but can't copy files and folders.
Anyone can please tell me the solution to fix this......
Thanks in advance

As far as I know, FTP does not support copy commands like that.

Copy under FTP refers to transfers between remote and local machines, in either direction.

Either they have to upload a new copy themselves or someone with shell access to the server can do the copy for them.

regards

Alan

I suppose you mean you can't copy files locally on the ftp server. That's probably because your server doesn't support FXP (server to server) transfers.

I don't believe FXP is related. Server to server is not the same as server to self, it relates to connecting two remote machines. FXP is a hack, and getting it to connect a server to itself (loopback) would be a bigger hack.

Thanks for the quick replies
Actually what they are doing is dragging and dropping files and folders that are actually on the FTP server and facing the error while doing that.
Its not possible to copy items for them all the time, 'cos its a common thing they do all the time. :|

Maybe you could set up a samba share or NFS directory on the server for the development team to work in ?
Symlink the web directory to that so they can test as normal.

@smoker, I'm afraid I can't do that.......'cos developers are using a software called Zend to access their files with FTP and Zend doesn't support Samba or NFS :|

Hi,

It does support SSH though. How much functionality it exposes I couldn't say.
Maybe you ought to talk to Zend ?
