french accents in SSH screen


I am trying to edit a PHP file with nano and it needs french character synmbols in it but the ssh terminal won't take these.
Any ideas how I can change the ssh screen to accept UTF8?

I believe this depends on what SSH client you are using

putty, it seems to work fine in the ubuntu ssh client

If it's putty then try to play with the locales in the putty settings
