Firmware upgradation and RAID controler change on RHEL 4


Dear Team,

I have a IBM server x3655 model 7985-5AA installed RHEL4v and critical application, I previously restart the server for maintenance purpose at the same moment hardware error found "RAID controller not sync properly" same discuss with vendor, his suggest to change the RAID controller and upgrade latest firmware of same.
Please suggest if the firmware is upgrade then how behavior of the OS. Can it is upgrade any hesitation or follow any precautions or pre-requisition.

The firmware upgrade of the RAID controller should not affect the OS in any way. I believe it is safe to upgrade

What about change the H/W RAID controller or tis safe to change.

No. Most likely it won’t work at all (well, you have to reinstall all the stuff). The internal operation how a true hardware RAID maps the data to disks (leaving some space for their own maintenance) is proprietary to each vendor. A RAID is not a backup. If the controller breaks, all might be lost.
