Firewall Applied Knowledge -- Is there a tutor to walk me through?
Ubuntu LXC
I have no clue as to how to setup and configure a firewall. I need to acquire enough applied knowledge to handle my firewalling needs for the servers I plan to have within LXC (I can create LXC containers, now I need to go the next step). I want to end up using Shorewall. I have been through a lot of reading on the firewall subject, but haven't found anything that clicks for me...as they all assume I have a working knowledge and I don't...and consequently, I am forgetting what I have read and worst of all, I haven't created anything! I need something that orientates me as I go, so that I understand why something is being done and can visualize things. Is there a tutor or something written up that guides me through creating a simple firewall and evolves me into more complex versions? Is there a master listing of firewall commands somewhere, explaining what those commands do? (I have looked for that list, and only find parts and peices.) I need somewhere to start that lets me build and use stuff, so that I am getting a feel for things as I go. I've stared at this whole thing way way too long. What do you recommend? Thanks!!! |
If you want to end up using Shorewall then you don't need to know the firewall(iptables) commands, Shorewall simplifies your firewall management. Have you tried the getting started guide?

It's been a long time since I looked at it. I will go and re-read it. Maybe I missed something. For some reason I have been looking at iptables stuff.
