Filesystem/mount problem?? .... df and ls -l (ll) from / cause ssh session hang.

I'm not sure what to check here. I have a system that's been up for a while without any noticable issues. It has 1 multipathed FC SAN connection using RHEL5 native multipathing. (EMC Powerpath software not installed)

The filesystem is EXT3 all around configured with LVM...pretty standard RHEL 5 system.

Today, someone noticed that running "ls -l" from / resulted in an unresponsive session. I tested it and tried running "ll" and "ls -l" and got the same problem. This was only on the / partition. If I run the command from any subdirectory, or simply type "ls", it works without my session hanging. As soon as I add the -l flag or type the ll command on /, the ssh session hangs.

I tried running "df" from the command line...it displayed all mounts, but also stalled. I've not tested any of this from the console, but it doesn't appear to be account specific as it happens for 2 general user accounts and root.

Anyone seen anything like this or know where I should look? Thanks.

Do you have any NFS mounts on this server? It could be that your server lost the connection to the NFS source.
