Filesharing server help
The past few weeks, I've been using Samba as a filesharing server. However, I eventually wanted to backup my Winows XP machine onto the server, which proved impossible due to the incompatibility of filenames. So, my question is - how can I set up my Debian box so that I can backup Windows XP files? What if I compress the files with tar before backing them up? Or is there a file-sharing server that I can use with Debian that avoids reading the filenames altogether? Thanks!

You need a great piece of software that will handle the backup flawlessly regardless of filesystem and file names. You can backup any number of ways with it. The program name is backuppc. If you put your distro in your profile, we could advise you on how to use that to install the backuppc software. If it is Debian, apt-get install backuppc will do it just fine.
You can also install it directly from source, you can download it at http://backuppc.sourceforge.net Peace, JimBass |
