I'm hosting my website on a Linux server and it used to be working fine but now I'm getting the HTTP 404 error page and I tried to check the permissions and nothing has changed,I also used the server IP address in the URL to make sure it's not a DNS problem and it's still the same problem.Any help will be appreciated. Thanks
The first test you'll have to do is checking if the server is still running.
On the server itself, check the server (Apache?) is still running; the command should be “/etc/init.d/httpd status” or something like that. Then try and connect to the web site locally (using a local user on the serveur, but not root).
It would help a lot if you could tell what distribution and what software you use.
thank so much for your response. the website is not hosted locally and i can access it through ftp and the cpanel and all the files do exist. In regards to what distribution it's i have no idea .
Actually, if you get a real 404 page your server is running.
If apache would be down you would get a 'no response' error from your browser.
Check your apache configuration. Alot of 404s come from accessing your server in different ways.
You used to access it by hostname? Check if you have a VirtualHost session in your apache configuration that might give you any clues.
The 404 error often happened to me at home due to files I had modified/replaced, and that ended up having permissions such that Apache was not allowed to read them.
Distribution: Ubuntu, Slackware, Gentoo, Fedora, Red Hat, Puppy Linux

Well duh. Do I feel stupid! 404 is an Apache error, isn't it?
Thanks for being so kind in pointing that out. You could have called me a dumbass and I would have deserved it.
