Fedora 21 install help
1 Attachment(s)
I'm trying to install Fedora 21 (in the image I tried the Fedora 23 install) on an HP ProLiant DL 140. I have used several monitors and TVs but the end result is the same.... A trimmed install screen....the only option I can click is the quit option.
I'm using a VGA cable and I have no idea why I'm getting these results....even after hitting tab at the initial install menu and typing "Linux resolution=640x480" or "Linux lowres" it either blacks out or results in the image attached.....how can I preferably get Fedora 21 on this machine so I may use amahi? |
first for fedora 21 you do not install it
21 is past it's End Of Life there is and NEVER will be any support for it there will NEVER be any security fixes or updates please use the current Fedora 23 fedora only has a 13 month support cycle with a new version released every 6 months as for the screen what 3d hardware is installed ? you might have to manually set the resolution if you want to use a very odd and unusual resolution |
Everything on this server is stock and as is from the shelf
|
So what is a decent OS to run on a server that has long term support?
|
Gentoo of course! Rolling distro, you will never install it again. ;)
I personally have RPM phobia, I'd use Gentoo, FreeBSD, Debian - in this order. |
I believe you have a fairly old video card... Or the monitor you are using doesn't support 800x600 resolution (mandatory minimum supported for the graphical installation, 640x480 will NOT work). I can't tell from the image whether it is the monitor or the video card --- but since the monitor is LCD, I would expect the problem is the video card.
You may have to use the text mode installation (https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US...text-mode.html) |
I ordered a low profile cheap 2GB pci-e video card with hdmi seeing as how there is a slot on the riser card for one.
Seeing as how Fedora is apparently at its EOL every 6mo what would a nice robust, easy to use, and free server OS would be recommended...I'm a complete noon at the server thing for the moment I'm trying to just simply run a file server and media server of some sort but I want to experiment as well with other things |
RHEL 7.2
or the free clones CentOS 7.2 and ScientificLinux 7.2 |

Very likely it will work itself out. Previous upgrades using yum mostly worked, even when it wasn't specifically supported. dnf has only had one release upgrade that "mostly" worked (based on the fedora forums). 20 to 21 I understand didn't. and 21 to 22 wasn't error free. 22 to 23 worked, but it still needs more validation. I hope the next one is more error free. |
I've read about centOS and also about using amahi which apparently installs over top of Fedora 21? I liked what amahi had to offer from what I have read. I haven't looked much into it but dosent Ubuntu have a long term support server OS as well?
