fdisk in relation to new box not having an operating system on it

Hi Everyone,

I work as a dba and have been tasked with setting up a linux box using red have for proof of concept on my job. I have never done this before and look up it as a challenge.

I had read the linux manual 2 or 3 times and that I understand how to create the partitions etc but there is a nagging question I need clarified from you if possible.

All the info out there jumps right into disk partitioning etc but they don't start at the very beginning ie "turning the switch on". I know you need to use fdisk to create the partitions but will someone clarify for me that this fdisk utilily is already on the server even though it is unpartitioned and with no operating system? Or do I have to use a separate cd rom that holds this fdisk utility to use?

Thanks for your help in this matter.

The install disk of the OS will come with a partitioning tool. Usually this will be fdisk, parted or cfdisk for command line installers or GParted if the OS has a graphical installer.

Hi,

Thanks for that clarification. Now I can sleep easier knowing where that tool is located. I appreciate your effort. I can't say much about this program but you started me down the right path.

thanks again.
