Ethernet Interface changed name (eth1 > eth0)

hey,

running on centos 5, initially the ethernet interface was eth1.
after changing some networking configurations (static, dhcp, etc) suddenly the interface name showing up is eth0.

dmesg shows eth0 as the ethernet controller even though I have "alias eth1 e1000" on /etc/modprobe.conf.

Any ideas what could cause this? I'm assuming it's something with the Network Configuration GUI and scripts which messed things up but it also seems to be more than that... something in kernel/driver level.

I'd appreciate some input.
Thanks.

solved

nevermind, issue solved by binding ethernet interface configuration to hw address (mac).
