Error sending status request (Operation not permitted)

Hi All,

One of the dudes here ran a chmod -R 777 in / on our production server. Not cool...

We are now experiencing the following error when trying to change users

Code:
[mqm@srv1 ~]$ su - jboss
Password:
Error sending status request (Operation not permitted)
Error sending status request (Operation not permitted)
Error sending status request (Operation not permitted)
Error sending status request (Operation not permitted)
su: cannot set groups
Error sending status request (Operation not permitted)
[mqm@srv1 ~]$
Any assistance will be gladly gladly accepted.

We are running Fedora Core 4

Code:
Linux srv1 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4smp #1 SMP Thu Jun 2 23:16:33 EDT 2005 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Honestly? Backup your production data and reinstall. There's no way in hell you're going to be able to find and fix the permissions for all files on the system.

Word of advice, don't give out the root account to everyone, use sudo. At least then if they're doing chmod thinking they're in their home directory but in /, it would prevent them from doing something like this.

If nobody comes up with a better idea, try this:

Code:
script
strace su - jboss
When it settles down, type

Code:
exit
If you don't see "Script done" right away, type

Code:
exit
again and again until you do.

You will find in your current directory a file called typescript. Post that on this thread and let's take a look-see.

Personally, I don't think the problem is the 777 permissions. I think that someone went in and tried to fix it, and fixed it too far.

Perhaps the “su” program no longer has the suid bit set?

Ooooo, good catch. Setting its permissions to 777 would do exactly that.

Actually, chmod +s would set the suid bit.
