I am completely new to Linux, but fairly experienced on windows.
I'm trying to install a GUI interface on Ubuntu LAMP Server 7.04, using the command line "Sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop" but when I enter it I get an error that says: "E: Couldn't find package ubuntu-desktop".

What am I installing "Ubuntu Desktop" from? Do I need to point it to an install directory? I put the original installation CD back in the drive but still get the same error.

I know this is totally newbie stuff, but I really need help.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Update: I didn't realize that "Ubuntu Desktop" is installed from the internet.
After I installed an ethernet card and connected it to the internet it installed perfectly, but now it won't run because of graphics card issues. I will post the details in another thread.

Are you being sarcastic or serious? Is it a bad thing to post a fix in reply to your own post? I am new here so I have no idea.

As far as running a GUI on a server, I plan to uninstall it in a few weeks and install WebMin, but being the nube that I am, I was uncomfortable loading and configuring WebMin on the command line.

Your post draws special attention when there are no replies. (See zero reply threads.) Replying to your own post when you no longer need help is, therefore, polite as it means the thread will be removed from that list.

If you prefer to edit the original post, change the first line to "Solved!" Then the mouse-over will spell out the thread's status.

I had the same problem until I realized that the Repository List (/etc/apt/sources.list) was not configured correctly. I went in and changed all the 'Gutsy' entries to 'Hardy' as per a post I found.

I then did:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
