enabling web caching in squid-2.6.STABLE21

Greeting all,
I'd like to inquire if by default squid-2.6.STABLE21 acts as a www cache in acceleration mode and secondly, in squid documentation it is alleged that squid can handle https connections which if directed to squid proxy via iptables fail. This makes https pages inaccessible, would anyone kindly help me out on this?

FYI: Am running CentOS 5.3 and squid is running in transparent mode. The proxy server similarly acts as the internet gateway, iptables run on the same system.

Thanks

As far as I know of the Squid works either in acceleration mode or as a proxy cache server. By default it works as a proxy cache server.
