Dovecot working through lan, not for domain

Hi all,

Today i decided I might aswell get a fresh install of Ubuntu from 7.04 to 8.10 since I figured i knew what i was doing this time around  but I've got a really odd problem i cant find a fix for...

Accessing my emails through thunderbird using my lan ip server address works fine, all my emails load and i can send emails fantastic, but, if i change it from the lan ip to either my domain name or to my external ip address it logs in fine, the server log says that it does but it does nothing after that, thunderbird just gets stuck loading the emails and eventually times out quietly and trys to log in again.

At first i thought maybe i had bind's dns settings wrong (i set it up with ISP config and thought maybe i did something wrong...) but that looks all ok, i can browse to it and i get the It Works! apache page but emails just seem to hang and do nothing. I've also tried the roundcube addon for isp config but that fails to so im guessing its using the domain name.

If it helps i followed this guide http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-ubuntu-8.10 but installed dovecot instead since everytime i tried courier i couldnt get it to work and just wasted time lol.

Hope that someone can help and that the above makes sense :D

I have a very limited expierence with dovecot but I would try and look at your authentication mechanism. It sounds like it is only allowing access from the localnetwork. http://wiki.dovecot.org/MainConfig and here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Dovecot might help
