Domain re-directing using DNS

I want to redirect a domain URL . I am not using any control panel to do the DNS record changes and I need to edit the configuration files to change it directly .I have a existing domain www.child.main.com , which has "A" record and PTR record and CNAME as "child " as well . when a user enters www.child.main.com , it must be re-direct to http://child.main.com . What record I need to change for this to work correctly?

Thanks

When you say CNAME as "child", you mean something like that:
Quote:
www.child.main.com. A x.x.x.x
child.main.com. CNAME www
In this case you don't need to change anything in dns, just configure your web server to have child.main.com as an alias to www.child.main.com
