Domain Name, Web Site Hosting and Apache
 

Hi,

I have just bought 2 web domains from www.fasthost.co.uk and want to know the next steps.

I have a dedicated ubuntu 8 server in my cupboard which I built for £60 and it already has Apache2 installed but not yet configured to host my sites.

Q1. Fasthost comes with 3 nameservers. ns1.livedns.co.uk,
ns2.livedns.co.uk, ns3.livedns.co.uk. Where do I put this info??

Q2. How do I connect the 2 domain names with my server?

Q3. Is it possible to have 2 domains running from 1 server? How do I route
the traffic to go to the correct index page for the correct website?

Q4. I have a dynamic IP but it hasnt changed once since I have been with
my ISP (ukonline). Do I need to go with someone to make it static?

1 - Nowhere. in a simple setup where the registrar hosts the dns that's just up to them to use. it's the A, MX, PTR and CNAME records YOU need to add to THEIR DNS servers to let others know how to reach you.

2 - As above, you need to give them your IP address, usually via some web interface on their site.

3 - yes, go research VirtualHosts for apache, very very common thing to do.

4 - if you want.It normally costs more, if it's possible at all. Alternatively, many companies like fasthost provide mechanisms to automatically update if it changes, processes which run on your server and continually phone home or check a site like whatismyip.com

5 - no, you probably should host your own domain, it's often cheaper to hire real hosting than it is to pay the electricity bill for a server in your home and you should have better uptime and stabiltiy as well as vastly higher amounts of bandwidth and even disk space.

I have found vodahost the most versatile and if they dont have it just a simple request on the forum board will get things going to get it.
they have tutorials and a fantastic affiliate program.
