Question Domain Name, how to associate it with my office LAN

I'm learning how to manage domain names.

What I have done:
I have registered a domain name (parked now).

What I want to do:
I want to associate my recently purchased domain name to a server in my office.
(Currently, I also have a pintoresque dynamic domain name through DynDNS, for my office server, which I use privately.)

Questions:
  1. Do I need to order a static IP for my office through my ISP in order to use my recently purchased domain name? Or can I have the recently purchased domain name point to the pintoresque dynamic domain name obtained through DynDNS?
  2. I'm trying to look for a page explaining in plain English how to do the mapping of my domain name to hosts in my office. Could you suggest a good link with that content?

Thanks for reading this.

Hello,

What's you goal? Do you want to point your domain name to your own DNS servers? Or do you want to point specific services, like web, mail, ... to your server(s) in your network? If you have DNS access for your domain you can set it up yourself, configure your router/firewall to redirect the correct server(s), if necessary have the service(s) listen and accept connections on the public IP too, and so on. You normally for basic use don't have to apply for a fixed IP address. You can use DynDNS also. It's up to you.

Kind regards,

Eric

Hi,

1. it's easier if you want to host some (or all) services at your office (like www, ftp...)
2. did you look at some of the how-to pages:
- domain name system BIND
- domain name server
- how to - configuring DNS
- Set Up Linux DNS

Write what distribution (Debian, RHEL, Ubuntu...) are you running on your server if you need more help configuring DNS (bind)
what do you want to do with the domain?
1. host your domain on your office server
or
2. let hosting do to your registrar of the domain

and then run the server in your office for serving web pages, maybe ftp etc.

Thank you guys for answering. And thanks for the links. I will read them thoroughly before going any further.
However, some initial details are in order:
  • My main office computer runs Arch, and so far I've been using dynamic DNS (xri.is-a-lunatic.org) basically to ssh to the office when I'm away on a business trip.
  • Now I'm getting a groupware suite that requires a more mainstream distro, so I'll be running it on an ubuntu server inside virtualbox. The services (https, caldav, LDAP, IMAP, SMTP, etc.) will be for the office network, but also for coworkers anywhere on the internet.
  • At this point, and especially considering that I will probably be hosting other services for clients in my office, I decided that it's time to replace xri.is-a-lunatic.org for a more professional and business-friendly name such as www.pipe-dream-corporation.com. That is why I bought the domain name.
This is where I am now. I'll post again when I do some more reading and have more insight on these matters.

I believe you can use your own domain name with DynDNS (instead of one of their domains). It's an addon service, with a fee attached. Dig around on their website....

If that doesn't work out you could use a commercial DNS hosting provider that supports dynamic DNS, for example dnsmadeeasy.com

Thank you. I'm adding that option to my list. I'm reading about it now
