DNS Server (BIND9)

Not sure if I should post this here or in Networking, but here goes...

I am trying to setup a DNS server at my house to play with. I have Ubuntu Gutsy and have BIND9 installed and running. I have a domain ( pointed to my IP address of as My DNS record is

$ttl 1 IN SOA (
1 ) IN NS IN A

The TTLs are low until I figure out whats wrong. I cannot ping Its unknown.

The goal is to host my own website for the family and a website for some friends with two separate domains. I am no longer sure if I am even going about this the right way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
