DNS bafflement - CentOS/ BIND setup

My first nameserver, and after hours of setting it up I cannot figure out why it won't start up. See the output below.

Code:
[root@dns-1 named]# ls
127.0.0.zone 192.168.0.zone andromeda.zone chroot data localhost.zone slaves
[root@dns-1 named]# named-checkzone localhost localhost.zone
zone localhost/IN: loaded serial 2012071600
OK
[root@dns-1 named]# named-checkzone 0.0.127.in-addr.arpa 127.0.0.zone
zone 0.0.127.in-addr.arpa/IN: loaded serial 2012071600
OK
[root@dns-1 named]# named-checkzone andromeda andromeda.zone
zone andromeda/IN: loaded serial 2012071500
OK
[root@dns-1 named]# named-checkzone 0.168.192.in-addr.arpa 192.168.0.zone
zone 0.168.192.in-addr.arpa/IN: loaded serial 2012071500
OK
[root@dns-1 named]# named-checkconf -z /etc/named.conf
zone localhost/IN: loaded serial 2012071600
zone 0.0.127.in-addr.arpa/IN: loaded serial 2012071600
zone andromeda/IN: loaded serial 2012071500
zone 0.168.192.in-addr.arpa/IN: loaded serial 2012071500
[root@dns-1 named]# service named start
Starting named: [FAILED]
I've banged my head against the wall with this for hours and now I can't think staight any more. Any help much appreciated. BTW I turned off chroot in sysconfig as I thought that would make it more simple.

have you actually looked at /var/log/messages for info on WHY it failed? You can also try running the named process in the foreground with extra verbose logging for more details
