Does
/etc/resolv.conf have proper DNS server addresses in it? Have you checked to make sure the local and/or network firewall isn't filtering this outgoing traffic? For a lot of DMZ installations filtering all outbound connections/streams is standard operating procedure, as it limits the amount of damage the server will cause when it gets compromised.
