differences betwne /dev/shm and kernel.shm


Whats the difference between /dev/shm defined in /etc/fstab, and the kernel.shm parameters defined in /etc/sysctl.conf please ?

I'm using RedHat 5.6 Enterprise x64

The first is a swap-backed file system in RAM and the second kernel parameters for shared memory.
