/dev/nfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!!

I followed https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DisklessUbuntuHowto to setup a diskless cluster. When a node boots up, it end with:

Code:
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root =(did the system wait for right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/nfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!!
I searched a lot and found some topics about that. However I didn't find a clear solution.
In that guide, /dev/nfs is used twice: 1) in /nfsroot/etc/fstab and 2) in /var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default.

I want to know why it doesn't find /dev/nfs?

proper kernel?

Hi mahmoodn

Have you compiled the NFSRoot option into the kernel you are booting? By default, this option is not enabled. You must download the kernel source (vanilla or distro specific, doesnt matter) and then enable this option in the config (using make menuconfig or similar config editors. DO NOT do this by simply editing the config file!). Make sure you compile it into the kernel (a "*" in menuconfig) and not just as a module (a "M" in menuconfig)

Good Luck,

Stu
