Customize SMTP Greeting Banner in Postfix 2.9.6

Hello there,

Well, it may look quite simple but I am stuck. If anybody could help by suggesting anything at all I would highly appreciate it.

How do I make the SMTP Greeting Banner to display the remote client's IP and server's name in Postfix 2.9.6?

For example these 2 lines below are default ones and work fine:

mail_name = MyMailServer
smtpd_banner = Welcome to $mail_name.

I tried doing it this way:

mail_name = MyMailServer
smtpd_banner = Hello $client_name on $server_address. Welcome to $mail_name.

In accordance with Postfix documentation these two variables of $client_name and $server_name are supposed to be taken from Postfix maillog files. In fact, documentation also says that it applies to smtpd_reject_footer directive and giving it a try with the same variables on SMTP Greeting Banner did not work. (they are definitely declared somewhere as it works with the smtpd_reject_footer)

Does anybody know how do I declare these two variables to be used in the banner? If it were for PHP I would declare them in a matter of seconds but how do I declare these two in Postfix main.cf or where is it declared? Perhaps there are also some other easier solutions to achieve it aren't there?

Anyway, would be really grateful for any pointers / assistance at all. Many thanks in advance!

...update.

I was advised on Postfix mailing lists that this feature was not supported in Postfix.

However, it would be great to have it replied after typing EHLO for example,

"Hello <user's server name> on <user's IP>. Welcome to $mail_name. Please, do not spam."

You could always patch the source and compile your own version that does.
