Connecting to samba pdc if not domain member

I have a slightly odd situation that I want to set up a samba domain contoller for some machines, but have other machines still able to connect to shares on that server without being members of the domain.

For example, if the domain is MYDOMAIN, and has the standard [homes] definition in smb.conf, can a non member connect to home? No XP home edition to connect, either full XP or maybe even mac.

The alternative would be to run a separate server in a virtual environment or similat, but it sounds like a lot of work if I don't need to.

Thanks in advance
