Connect to server doesnt work

Hi,

I have just installed the Server edition of Ubuntu on one of my machines. I have 3 others with the desktop edition installed.

My main purpose of this is the play games through the network, but I would possibly also like to enable file sharing as well.

Certain games such as LieroX work without the server, but it seems for file sharing, or for games such as chess and nibbles (that are installed with the OS).

How do I connect to the server (ive tried to use "connect to server" with no luck, so would appreciate a step by step guide to how to do this.)

Thanks in advance,
Nick

The usual Unix method is to use NFS. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=249889

Could anyone please tell me the exact setup instuctions for doing this during the installation?

Note: This machine has no external internet connection, and cannot get one, so I will need to do this without the internet.

Thanks,
Nick.

You could print this. http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/w...ccess_with_NFS

Clearly this isn't a Ubuntu tutorial, but the principles are the same.

I assume that the packages you need are on the Ubuntu install disk(s).

It looks to me like all this will do is allow file transferring.

Will I be able to connect to this server for such uses as games (eg chess and nibbles).

These require a server to connect to, and this is the primary reason i have the server. What is the easiest way of getting these games to work (even if it doesnt require a server).

Please note: I have no internet connection, so i cannot connect to an online server, I need to host the game locally.

Thanks,
Nick.

If the games don't require a server per se, you may be having firewall issues. Have you tried with the firewalls on the various machines disabled?

Its kinda hard to explain. If you have Ubuntu installed on your system, casn you please go to Applications>Games>Chess
Then File>Network Games

All i want to do is connect to another of my machines with this. It asks me to connect to a host or something, and i cannot enter in the IP address of the other computers with any success.

Its not likely to be firewall issues, as I have no Antivirus or internet security on the computer.

When I try to connect to a host, a web address comes up that it wants to connect to, but as i have said, I HAVE NO INTERNET CONNECTION so this cannot work.

Is there a way to host a game locally?

How do I connect to this game if I can?

If the server is hardcoded into the game, then I would guess not. If it is changeable, it will depend on whether the games talk directly to each other or via a central server. Do you know the situation?

I'm relatively new to Ubuntu, and no, I have no idea about how these servers work.

Does anyone else have any idea how they work, and how I could host them locally?

Nick.
