Command to test DNSmasq?

I'm brain farting, how do I test to see if the DNS part of DNSmasq is working on my box?

just use it...??? make a DNS request to it. use the host / dig tools if you aren't clear enough on how to change your own nameservers.

The problem with 'just using it' is that if it's not working, the machine will just resolve using hosts file and/or the DNS specified by the DHCP so, I'll get a response and still not know if DNSmasq is working.
