Changing from Raid 1 to Raid 0
 

My server was installed by the technicians at the datacenter and they have put it to raid 1. I have already got files on it.

The technician informed me that there is software to split the raid1 to make it back to the 1 full drive as i have

2 x 750GB harddrives but its on raid 1 so its mirroring as they call it.

Anyone know any software that will split this so I can still keep my files there?

Your question doesn't make sense...you say it's already mirroring (which makes two drives look like one), and you want it to be one drive again??

You don't say what version/distro of linux you're using, or if the drives are mirrored at the hardware level on the controller, or via LVM in Linux. Different mirroring requires different solutions.

If you didn't install it, and you don't maintain it, why not just tell the technicians to un-mirror it for you? No matter what, though...MAKE BACKUPS...there is NO absolutely foolproof solution, that has absolutely zero risk.

If this is a server in a datacenter, why would you want to remove the data redunancy it already has =/. Personally I think it's very dangerous to switch a configuration from raid 1 to raid 0. You'd be better with a full back-up and then switching to raid 0 and doing a restore from the back-up.

Software that splits a raid 1? as TB0ne already said, if it's raid 1 then the data is already mirrored! If you toke a Disc out it would still work, it would just lose the redunancy it currently has. What you want is a software application that takes data from one disc and splits it across two in a completely unredundant manor that matches RAID 0, their might be something out their for software raid but it just sounds a terrible way to do things. Hardware raid would rely on the card itself to have the ability to do this, but it'd still be highly dangerous if it could, best way is to take a back-up and do a restore after the change in RAID.

IMHO you are better off with Raid 1 for redundancy as you have already stated this is a server in a data center. The slight increase in performance is not worth the reduction of redundancy and added complexity at a software level. At hardware, I'd only recommend it gamers who are absolutely consumed in having OTT performance machines which break when someone touches them... after all in Raid 0, if one disc dies, the other disc becomes useless too.
