centos5.1 installation on large disk (2.8 tera) fails during partitioning at setup

Hello to all

i have an installation problem with centos.

here is a little information:
IBM server
XEON CPU
4GB MEM
IBM raid controller
4x750GB HDD's

i have tried different raid modes with the IBM controller and the only thing that work for me is to create 2 volumes with 2 disks every volume.
so the operating system only sees 2 large disks with 1500GB.
and i can install without a problem. but i need raid5 :-)

i have also tried to use raid5 but during the installation at the partitioning part i get some error saying something about GFS... is not supported etc...

after testing more with volumes i found out that if my volume is bigger than 2tera i can't get past the partitioning part during install :-(

any idea?

thank you

I think that the size limitation for a partition is 2 terabytes. I think that you will have to have more than one partition.

also if i create raid5 from all 4 disk's and
during install at the partitioning part i create:

/boot 100MB
and the rest to a PV
and then create a VG and
small LVM's for:
swap 4GB
/ 30GB
/home 100GB

i still get the same error.

or is the PV also limited in his size?

thanks

problem solved.

i have created raid5 from all 4xdisk's

volume-A 50GB
volume-B all the rest a 2TB+

installed centos5.1 on the volume-A

and voila :-) no installation problems...

and now i can create LVM's with volume-B and i have no errors...

thanks...

here is also an explanation from an RHCE.

you can't work that simply with >2tb disks on the installer. you will need to create a GPT disk label in order to use disks larger than 2tb, and grub doesn't support this. you can install a (unsupported) patch to grub that will allow grub to work with GPT partition tables..
this is all quite complex im afraid, and a bit of a large subject to fully explain in an email :/
but the bottom line is - you won't be able to install centos5 over a <2tb disk without some trickery..

thanks to Amir Sela for the information.
