I've never used Dovecot, but a few things to check with mail problems in general are:

1) Check the file permissions for the user in /var/spool/mail

2) Make sure you have the user name and password correct.

3) Check the errant user's groups with a user who's email works. Like I said, I've never used Dovecot, but it just sounds like a file permissions problem.

I hope this helps.

What log exactly are you grepping for this user account? Dovecot supports debugging and you may want to turn this feature on (set debug to yes in a few places in the configuration file). This should put extra information in your mail.log. Also, what happens when someone sends a message to this account? Does your MTA say that the mail has been delivered? If so, this indicates that the account is valid. Are these accounts virtual accounts or system user accounts? As the previous poster suggested, is there a permissions problem on the mailbox directory structure?

If you are using maildir then make sure that user has the correct directory structure in their home directory and that it is owned by them.

/home/user/Maildir/new
/home/user/Maildir/tmp
/home/user/Maildir/cur

Also check to see if their uid number is below 500, that is configurable in dovecot.conf
