can't configure mod_python

Downloaded & unzipped mod_python, but ./configure fails with:

I installed Python from source, so I don't know what the problem is.

Any ideas?

Code:
# locate libpython
/usr/lib/dia/libpython_plugin.la
/usr/lib/dia/libpython_plugin.so
/usr/lib/libpython2.3.so
/usr/lib/libpython2.4.so
/usr/lib/libpython2.3.so.1.0
/usr/lib/python2.3/config/libpython2.3.a
/usr/lib/python2.4/config/libpython2.4.a
/usr/lib/libpython2.4.so.1.0
# strings /usr/lib/libpython2.4.so | grep Py_NewInterpreter
Py_NewInterpreter
Py_NewInterpreter: call Py_Initialize first
# strings /usr/lib/python2.4/config/libpython2.4.a | grep Py_NewInterpreter
Py_NewInterpreter
Py_NewInterpreter: call Py_Initialize first
Py_NewInterpreter
Perhaps you forgot some configuration with Python that is necessary?
If you have multiple versions of libpython, try passing --with-python explicitly.

never solved it, just using the tiny server that comes with django until somebody makes this a little easier.

Solution

Found the solution but this forum isn't letting me post the URL where I found it... weird. You need the 'python-dev' package, not just the runtime engine.
