cannot automate rsync backup

The 2 servers are Fedora C5, a main and a backup. rsync is used to copy files from the main server to the backup.
This works fine manually but requires a password which prevents automation. A rsyncd.conf file has been created in /etc/ as prescribed in 'LINUX Server Security',(O'Reilly). I cannot get this to work. We have added RSYNC_PASSWORD=password to the environment variables. This also fails. The directions in Fedora 5 Bible (Wiley) have also been tried with the same result.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

You could use an SSH authenticated login (if you have the capability). Check out the "-e" option in the rsync manual (specifically "-e ssh").

I'd suggest running this as a cronjob with a service account. You can use Pubkey Authentication to make automating the login simple.

Are you able to do a normal SSH authenticated connection (without being prompted for the password)? If not, you'll need to configure that first.

If it were me, I would think about adding ssh-agent.
