can't start mysql server

i try to install mysql server on my ubuntu edgy, everything seems fine, but it just can't start daemon with the following error message:

Starting MySQL database server: mysqld.
/etc/ line 34: RUNLEVEL: unbound variable
invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "start" failed.
and i have check /etc/, in line 34 it got this

  # Bug #400598
    if [ -z "$RUNLEVEL" ]; then
        # we need only the current level
        RUNLEVEL=`runlevel | sed 's/^. //'`
