Bulletin board software

I want to set up a web page with a bulletin board but I don't know which software to use. The main feature I was looking for is a good tree view.I would like a really fancy tree map with a key rating the posts, and tooltips that tell you the post title. But I would settle for a regular directory style tree ,as long it is pretty quick in responsiveness. I remember using some of the old forums that had really crappy tree views though :P .I have looked at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...forum_software

but I don't see what I'm looking for.I think I need a threaded forum for a tree view .I am new to web design too,so maybe use javascript ? I do know some c,c++ and perl so I could do some small modifications .

Thanks

I don't see anything I like there.
I will probably have to do some coding to adapt an existing project.

Which is better perl or php? I know some perl ,and php look similar.
Looks like most of the larger forum software is in php. I'll prtobably start with a perl based project.

I have one of my wild ideas again ,so please be kind.I don't really have the skill to do this but I can try. I want each thread to have a "mindmap" view generated in svg.

What do you think of that? Pretty crazy huh? I just can't figure out what to do if two branches of the map get combined.

Any advice?
