I have setup a small private domain using zentyal 4 and NAS4free 9.1 and have managed to get Active Directory, windows shares, ssh and a couple of other things working.
My ultimate goal is to be able to type http://hostname.example.com in a web browser (IE not allowed) and access the web admin of other server and websites within the domain and I can for about 5 minutes before "Server not found". It takes about an hour before I can access the server web admin again.
Through the rambling of a youtube tutorial I heard about FQDN but I am at a loss as to how to test this
I have literally run out of words to google this with.
I know Im not giving much about setup simply because I have no idea what information would be helpful.
Thank you for your support

in fact, that's easy. You don't give a lot of detail, though, but probably all you need is a local DNS running. I'm using dnsmasq on my LAN for that, but if you only have a handfull of local hostnames, you could as well put them into the /etc/hosts file of each client.
Using dnsmasq, you'd only have to edit the hosts file of the server machine, as dnsmasq reads that file and serves the information in it in response to DNS queries.
Should I add the .bbe? I did an embedded install and I understand that everything goes into ram so if I edit the hosts file will I not lose that on the next reboot?
So, four months on and I'm still trying to do this and the only thing that I know for sure is I can't browse websites by hostname within a private domain with Zentyal as the domain controller. This is the third forum I'm asking for help on and I am no closer to understanding what I'm doing wrong, what I am missing, what I need to do, what question to ask.
In 4 months of googling, reading, examples, testing, alias, tutorial, searching, nsswitch, configuring, nslookup, ifconfig, dig, reinstalling and crashing my machine the four words that seem to come up the most are resolve, forwarders, redirector, DNS cache.
In terminal if I ping any machine within the domain by IP address, it works.
In Terminal if I ping any machine within the domain by hostname, unknown host
In a web browser if I go to a website within the domain by IP address, it works
In a web browser if I go to a website within the domain by hostname, server not found
I'm pretty sure the server is missing something, and I think what it's missing is knowing which IP address goes with which hostname (maybe it's the other way around). I have not done anything manually to help the server do this, which is where I think I need the help. After 4 months that's as close as I can get to describing whatever it is I'm trying to describe.
The domain controller is Zentyal 4 stand alone on a private network with no access to the internet.

I'm beginning to suspect that the term "domain" in your posting refers to a Windows networking domain, not -as I thought first- to a domain name in the DNS.
Then I'm sorry I have to back out here, as I have no knowledge whatsoever about Windows domain based networks.
And my previous reply may be bogus then, as it tried to address a completely different matter.
Maybe I'm asking the question wrong, which would explain why I'm not . . . anyway. Taking this as a learning opportunity could you please elaborate on this 'domain name in the DNS' what do you mean by that?
