booting with less resources

hi,

I am having an issue with a server that I think has no space in the hard drive or having problem with some spam and postfix, I checked the system log and the server get freeze when postfix is working, but now the server get freeze when is booting and I can not to get access. I thought that booting with less resources the system let me clean some folders.

thank you

questions:
1. distribution -> this is really needed to help you on what commands to give
2. did you try single user mode ?
3. is your /tmp or / full ? were you able to get to this level of finding out these ?
4. by "get freeze" what exactly do you see in the console ? is the kernel booting at all ?

sorry about that, I use mandriva and I have not tried user mode, the thing is that server when is booting, get freeze before, the computer boot, sometime get freeze when just check the bios, also get freeze when is loading all programms,(postfix, apachectl, mysql, drivers) but sometime I restart and I just get black screen. I am starting to think that could be CPU or video, or something from hardware.

plaese give me some help

Al

If its 'freezing' (aka hanging) early on ie even when doing the POST (Power On Self-Test: bios / ram tests), then that's a HW issue.
My system is playing up as well.
1. Try taking the cover off (make sure its off/disconnected) and re-seating all the cables/plugs/cards/cpu fan etc.
2. (not recommended, but works for me) give it a good smack!
3. take it to a HW specialist
4 could be a dying CMOS battery, check/re-seat that as well; cheap to replace

Also, grab a linux CD and if sometime lucky to reach to the level of booting off from CDROM then
run the memtest86+

this could be RAM issue too ...

yes, I am sure is a hw problem as you saying, I replace the cmos mem, I made sure everything was plug and connected, I litter knock some parts :| and I took all the memory rams and I was testing one by one to see if something wrong, I can make run a memtest86 because get freeze before. how can test the processor, is old and it will be hard to fine it, men, I am in trouble, also I going to buy a power supply and test it.

Thank you for your help that you are giving me bhaslinux, I am not to expert on linux but I am trying very hard, with some linux and hw experience, but when this kind a thing happen, men it can be too deep.

Let me ask you, I have other server that I am not using, if I install the hd that I have now in the sever with the problem, on the server that is working, as slave,, the data or configuration will change?, the hd it will work again if I put it back on the original server? or I going to have problem on boot or programs when I will do it? . Because I want to take some data from there that I need and I want to make sure the system will work again in the original server tower.

Thank you,

Old hardware you say ? The issue I have typically run into with old hardware is the dreaded Capacitor plague I've lost 3 or 4 servers to this issue now. (Hey they were old and needed replaced anyway.. ) The electrolytic caps on the mother board fail, the server starts locking up, then eventually it can no longer boot..

This is a quick visual / touch inspection you can make. Do you see leakage on the caps and depicted in the link (click on the images to view larger ) ? If you touch the tops of the caps with your finger are they domed rather than completely flat ?

ultimately it's dead at that point, unless you replace the motherboard or the Caps on the current motherboard..

Funny thing is the last server I lost that way was my 'temporary ' Postfix email server that I built when the previous mail server died. the Temp mail server (PIII 500 256 MB RAM) ran for 4 years before it too died. I finally got new hardware this time around...
