Boot Ubuntu-10.04 in rescue mode to edit ftab

Hello All,
I have an issue with the fstab on Ubuntu 10.4 - I need to mount the system with a rescur cd and edit the fstab.

I have the CD for 10.4 but am afraid the process on mounting the system will overwrite the system. With all the information about Ubuntu I can not find information about this process ? Can someone assist please?

Thanks,
Stephen

You can use any Live CD, it doesn't have to be the Ubuntu installation disc. But in any event, booting to CD and mounting the drive will not damage it's contents in any way. Just make sure you don't actually start the Ubuntu installer.

Step-by-step:

Boot from the 10.04 cd
Choose "Try Ubuntu", not "Install ubuntu"
Wait for it to boot.

Go to Places ... Computer
Find the partition you want to mount
Double-click it, it opens in a window, and an icon oldfilesystem is placed on your desktop, so it is now mounted. oldfilesystem should be changed to reflect what it is called on your desktop.

open a terminal
become root with sudo -i No password is needed.
then
cd /media/oldfilesystem/etc
nano fstab
Make edits
Save edits
exit
Close all windows
R-click your oldfilesystem icon on the desktop. Choose Unmount.
Shutdown
Remove CD
Reboot
