Best desktop environment & hardware spec needed for more than 20 vnc sessions ?
 

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for the best desktop environment & the RAM & Processor needed to support more than 20 vnc sessions on single machine.

As of now I have 3 separate machines - 2 RHEL4 (with gnome)+ 1 Fedora 12 (LXDE) - acting as VNC server for different teams within my company. The main purpose of the VNC session is to have linux terminal for opening / editing files using vim, running scripts and to do SSH to actual servers. The above mentioned machines are running with Core 2 Duo processor (2.1GHz) with 3GB DDR2 RAM.

Could you recommend me
- any best vnc server for RHEL 4/5 or even Fedora 12
- Is it good to use LXDE over Gnome ( as my understanding is that LXDE use lesser RAM than others ) ?
- any memory/ processor optimizing method for vnc servers

What are you doing in those sessions for which VNC is needed instead of putty?

If everything you do would work via putty, you are far better off using putty rather than VNC.

If you need VNC, then maybe you'll get better answers to your questions if you mention some things you want to use that wouldn't work via putty.

If you use VNC, I think most of the ram used by the desktop would be shared across all users, but most of the ram used by VNC would not be shared across users.

When selecting a desktop for a single user system with too little ram, the ram footprint of the desktop software may make a big difference. But for your purposes, the ram size of the desktop software is almost lost in the noise. It should not be a factor in selecting a desktop. Select the one you think will be less confusing to your users.
