Backup to LTO 2 Device

I am trying out some backup scripts to device /dev/st0.
ITs a lto scsi drive. When I try and run
tar -czvf /dev/st0 test2 test2 , it backs up.
I try and do "/bin/mt -f /dev/st0 fsf 1"
Works fine. But when I do .
/bin/mt -f /dev/st0 fsf 2, I get I/O error.

Could you please help me with this.

Cheers,

One needs to understand how tar works and how the tape drive functions.

tar -options file1 file2 will actually combine both files into one archive. So there is only one file on the tape drive. In addition /dev/st0 will rewind the tape upon completion of the current operation. If wanting to save several tar archives to tape you will want to use /dev/nst0.

See tar man pages for additional information.
