Backup of Operating System


Hi,

Kindly provide the steps to take the Operating System Backup for Advance Server 3 & 4.

What are you trying to achieve exactly? Complete backup, data backup...

What have you already tried? Google is your friend.

Hi,

As I have done on AIX OS by the help of smitty. What will be the Redhad linux 3 & 4.

May be you are asking about making system backup(or system tape), for that there is no tools to do that, from RedHat, the preferred way is to take a backup of your data alone, then take a backup of you configuration files( usually under /etc).
in restoring, you have to completely install every thing from scratch, then restore your /etc files, after that your datafiles.

There is afio which is an archiving application like cpio, but much better IMO. I have been using afio for years doing backups and has saved my butt more than once. Plus there is a large number of script wrappers write to use afio. Do a little search on google and you will find some good info.
