backup drive

I have a dell server running Suse 10 Enterprise. I have a Dell RD1000 backup drive in the server. I also have a RD1000 usb external drive. The RD1000 is basically a SATA laptop drive in a case. So here is the issue.

When I have the internal RD1000 disabled via the bios I can plug the usb RD1000 in and pop in the disk. It will automount on the Desktop. It shows up as /dev/sdc1. At that point I can copy data form the usb drive and then right click on it and eject the disk.

If i unplug the usb and enable the internal one it also shows up as /dev/sdc1 with I have to use the mount /dev/sdc1 /myfolder command before I can use it. That is fine I don't mind to do that. I am not sure why it doesn't automount. Can someone explain that?

The bigger issue is this. I need to have both RD1000s connect because we have 3T of data to copy and I don't just want the one drive working. If I have both the usb plugged in and the internal one enabled I don't see anything. the dev directory just has /dev/sdc. Which I am guessing is the drive itself and the sdc1 is the disk because the drive doesn't have a partition on it without the disk being in. Correct me if I am wrong about that.

After see that neither one would work I unplugged the usb RD1000. I put the tape in the internal RD1000 but it didn't show up as /dev/sdc1. I did a ls of the dev directory before and after i put the disk in and no new files/devices where created. I rebooted and it picked up the internal drive and said it is using /dev/sdc. Before all this the dmesg said the internal one was found at /dev/sdc and would use /dev/sdc1. So finally the questions. Why can't have both RD1000s? Why is the internal one not working now?

I fixed it. It was my fault. I did some more searching and found that /dev/sda was the internal drive and when it had the disk in it the name didn't change. I also found that the usb drive was /dev/sda1.

so i can use mount /dev/sda /foldername to access the internal and then use the automounted RD1000 on the desktop. Which came back after the reboot. Not sure what changed it form /dev/sdc to /dev/sda but its staying that way now.
