Authoraization failed -- root user while login
Hi Friends,
I have RedHat Linux 4 Enterprise 32-Bit. It was working fine suddenly not sure why it gives me "Authorization Filed" while login from GUI and I am not able to login using CLI also. Your prompt help will be appreciated. |
Greetingz!
Just a thought, maybe your password is expired or you're typing it in wrong? Since you have physical access to the system, login as 'root' and reset your user account. |
In principle it’s possible to prohibit a root login in the GUI by certain settings, some users even like it this way to avoid accidental login as root. Maybe this setting was applied by some update.

Are you logging in as root? On the GUI?
This is a very bad idea, but if you need to know where to look, check this post. |
this is the almost antique RHEL4
the RHEL4 that red hat postponed killing off of 4.9 last year the RHEL4 that is on EXTRA Extended life support the Extra that you have to pay EXTRA to red hat for . it did not lock out the root gui login -- it is TOO OLD for that as pointed out it is very possible that the root password was set with a time to live boot into single user and make a new one or seeing as rhel4 is OLD if you have NOT been paying red hat for the EXTRA EXTENDED life support -- you "might" ( slight chance) have been "cracked" and you might not be in control of this server -- slight chance of this The expired password is more likely |
