Assigning machine name according to a 'pattern': possible?

Hi Group,
I'd appreciate anyone indicating if the following is:
a) possible
b) what might be required to implement it.

I'd like to be able to assign the names on a private network, as machines start, but in a regular way. An example should make things clear.
Specifically, I'd like to be able to have the following pattern:
aunt-0-0.domain.com
child-0-0.domain.com
child-0-1.domain.com
aunt-0-1.domain.com
child-0-2.domain.com
child-0-3.domain.com
aunt-0-2.domain.com

So, as machines start/connect to the private network, the pattern is: The first, then every 3rd instance is an 'aunt', 2,3,5,6 instances are named child.
If it makes implementation feasible/easier, the numeric index could be common:
aunt-0-0.domain.com
child-0-1.domain.com
child-0-2.domain.com
aunt-0-3.domain.com
child-0-4.domain.com
child-0-5.domain.com
aunt-0-6.domain.com

Appreciate any hints or suggestions.

Hi there,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from your question, I assume you are trying to set up a dhcp server.

If so, my question is: do you want to assign IP address to restricted machines, or do you want your network to be open for anyone to use?

I believe only after answering to this question, we should be able to help you in a more efficient way.

Cheers

Hi,
Thanks for the response,

No, I'm needing to set-up a DNS server. Each machine would already have an IP address and name. I'm needing to assign an additional name that follows the pattern mentioned.

The machine will accept connections from any machine one a private network.

Thanks
