Unhappy apache2 maxing cpu on php4 page loads (debian etch)

Hi all,

I've recently built a little Debian Etch based server on a VIA C3 800MHz board with 512Mb RAM, yes I know that's not a quick box - it doesn't get any traffic as such.

The box serves up some pages fine but when I request a php page the apache2 process goes upto 100% and sits there for a few seconds and takes an AGE to load.

As I said I know its not a quick box but I expected it to be able to serve a php page to a single user without pausing for 5sec+ each time!

Any suggestions as I cant find any clues in the logs...

Cheers
Matt

A little more info on the box... its running standard latest Debian stable packages. I wasn't too sure on kernel to run as I've heard these via samuel2 c3 chips don't run well with i686.

Kernel: 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-486
Apache: 2.2.3 (Debian)
PHP: 4.4.4-8+etch6 ------ now running 5.2.0-8+etch13
mod_ssl: 2.2.3
OpenSSL: 0.9.8c
mod_perl: 2.0.2
Perl: v5.8.8

I really don't think it should be maxing the cpu for 5sec+ every time a PHP script is run, so any help/ideas greatly received.

Cheers
Matt
