Apache won't start - module ssl_module is already loaded - FIXED

I thought that I should post this to help out anybody who is experiencing a similar problem.
Our website had problems this morning - Apache had been stopped during a Red Hat update and refused to start afterwards with the message:

[Fri Jan 30 04:53:04 2009] [warn] module ssl_module is already loaded, skipping (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:443 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs

The problem is that SSL changes have been made in the Red Hat Enterprise 5.3 update, these changes will make Apache refuse to start if you have changed your SSL configuration from the default.

Solution in our case was to comment the following lines out of the /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf file:

#LoadModule ssl_module modules/mod_ssl.so
#Listen 443

This allowed Apache to start, with SSL still functioning correctly as those lines also appear in our custom xxx_ssl.conf file.

I was having this issue in our test environment for a JIRA server on a Rhel 6.5. I could not get to the site. I followed your instructions and that fixed it. Thanks for sharing.
