Which ports should I keep open and which close??


Hello All,
I am setting up new fedora server.But I am bit confused for firewall setting on that server.I am using APF firewall .
Can anybody give me the list of ports which i should keep open and other close for normal operation of the server.

Depends what it is serving. For a normal client system you need no ports open at all. For a server, you will do, but you need to say what the server is doing before anyone can tell you which ports to open up.

HEllo,
It's Fedora Web server specifically used for web services such as http,mysql.
Currently we are using it for only mysql purpose.So can u please tell me which ports do i need to keep open for it?
In general which ports are kept open for a apache web server ?

For a web server you need port 80 open. If people are accessing MySQL directly then there will be a port for that (can't remember which) but hopefully they only get to access the web server and apache talks to MySQL so no port is needed.

If you need remote management then you'll also want port 22 open for SSH; but don't open it unless people need to ssh into the server from outside the firewall.

As a general guide, close every port. If something doesn't work, you can normally look at the firewall logs and see which port it is blocking, then open that port up.
